The Scope

We’ve worked with the Chango Food Group from the start, executing the brand design, supporting interior design to align with brand standards, and building their online community through social media and email marketing.

Brand Design

El Malo's brand identity is rooted in the taqueria tradition: bold color, strong type, and organic iconography. Taqueria Blue and Royal Red anchor a palette built for visibility and grit, while the script logo and mischievous monkey mascot bring the name to life.

El Malo translates literally to "the bad," but the spirit of the name is something more playful — it’s the “mischievous one” — a nod to the street-food culture of Tijuana and the laid-back taco shops of San Diego where the rules were never that serious to begin with.

The interior design was built around the brand guide that was developed before the renovation, this allowed the team to choose a Sherwin Williams blue that closely matched the brand blue that defines the interior.

The exterior was designed by Camille Maede and hand painted by PrimeTime signs. The intent was to create a very simple and distinct exterior like that seen in the streets of Mexico.

Social Media Management

Give people a reason to crave the food, and give them a reason to care about the place. Every week, the content calendar rotates between menu-driven conversion posts — bowl and burrito highlights, Taco Tuesday features, breakfast launches — and consideration content that puts the people behind El Malo front and center. From founder Andre's origin story to recurring employee spotlight segments, the feed builds familiarity and trust before a customer ever walks through the door. The result is a brand that sells without feeling salesy — and a restaurant that feels like somewhere you already belong.

The social media strategy is built around a simple tension:

Photography & Videography Styles

  • We developed a photographic style rooted in their brand personality — flash photography, bright whites, and high saturation — applied consistently across every shoot to build a recognizable visual identity. The focus is always on energy and fun: models playing with their food, the messier the better. For video, we opted for a mobile-first, UGC-style approach that leans into the open kitchen concept and on-camera interviews, while photography stays centered on the food itself.

Drone footage does two things at once.

El Malo Tacos is in Plaza Midwood

It stops the scroll with a perspective people don't expect, and it grounds your business in the neighborhood it belongs to, helping your audience understand where you are, and why it's worth the visit.

Email Marketing

Email marketing for El Malo isn't built in isolation — it's an extension of the same story being told across social, in-restaurant, and online ordering. Every campaign is designed to mirror the brand's visual language: bold type, saturated color blocks, and photography that makes the food do the talking. Whether launching Family Packs or promoting Game Day Catering, the messaging is kept direct and action-oriented — because El Malo's customer doesn't need to be sold, they just need to know it exists and how to order. Each send is timed and structured to align with what's live on social, keeping the brand consistent from the first scroll to the final click.
